This work is the most detailed and comprehensive work to date dealing with the issue of whether the church has replaced Israel in God’s plan. It explains what supersessionism is and offers a thorough review of this doctrine in church history. This dissertation also looks at the primary hermeneutical, biblical, and theological arguments used by both supersessionists and nonsupersessionists to support their respective views. In the end, Michael argues that the church is not the new Israel that permanently replaces national Israel as the people of God. He also asserts that God’s irrevocable promises to Israel will be fulfilled with the nation Israel.
