New Article on the Genre of Revelation

May 7, 2009

Hey everyone! This is Mike Vlach at TheologicalStudies.org. I want to draw your attention to our latest feature article by Erik Swanson called, “The Genre of Revelation.” This article can be viewed on our homepage at www.TheologicalStudies.org.

As many of you already know, those who are not premillennialists often dismiss a historical-grammatical approach to the Book of Revelation because it is “apocalyptic literature.” The genre of apocalyptic supposedly give the interpreter the right to reject historical-grammatical hermeneutics and avoid what appears to be explicit evidence for an intermediate kingdom (Rev 20) that comes after the second coming (Rev 19) but before the eternal state (Rev 21).

Swanson shows that the labeling of Revelation as “apocalyptic” and the resulting blanket dismissal of historical-grammatical hermeneutics in regard to this book is simplistic and not warranted. While acknowledging that there are aspects of Revelation that contain apocalyptic elements, Swanson shows that there are several significant differences between the genre of Revelation and the genre associated with Jewish apocalyptic literature.

In a systematic way, Swanson takes the reader through the characteristics of apocalyptic literature and shows how Revelation differs from apocalyptic literature in major ways. He then offers his thoughts on how Revelation should be understood in regard to genre. You will want to read this article at www.TheologicalStudies.org.
